School Gardens is a program in Santa Barbara, California seeking to give students a meaningful connection to their food and their environment through the installation and implementation of edible, educational gardens in public schools.
Our program is made possible through a partnership between the Orfalea Foundation and the Center for Sustainability at Santa Barbara City College.
Our main objective is to develop gardens in public schools throughout Santa Barbara County, while supporting educators in using the gardens to support, improve and enliven class activities and curriculum.
In the 2009-2010 academic year, School Gardens installed or enhanced and integrated edible gardens in 16 elementary schools throughout Santa Barbara County. At the end of the 2011-2012 school year, School Gardens is in 29 schools in 7 districts in Santa Barbara County. Beginning in Fall 2012, the program will expand its services to 6 new schools, while continuing to support the already participating schools.
