This was a fun lesson that combined picking, preparing, eating and learning. I worked with the 3rd grade lead teacher and a volunteer parent. We divided the class into three groups, very manageable. One station was learning various fruits and vegetables of all colors, another was harvesting kale and rainbow chard (to be eaten later), and the third was preparing and eating rainbow kabobs. The kids had a great time, actually, we all did! This lesson can be done with any grade level, just make sure you have enough space to prepare the fruit. It was pretty messy and very juicy. We also got to learn a little bit about compost as all the trash could be put in the bin.
Since this was the first time I worked with this class, we all needed to learn each others names. The kids really enjoyed introducing themselves as ‘Chef …..’. I am very excited to do more food related activities!
