SYV Charter School – Mrs. Beaird’s 2nd grade class made popcorn from corn they planted last spring and harvested about two weeks ago. The corn is an heirloom variety called Dakota Black Popcorn and was grown and used long ago by Native Americans to make popcorn. The 2nd graders helped remove the kernels from the cob and put them in a brown paper bag. Mrs. Beaird microwaved the bag and presto! Delicious popcorn was enjoyed by all. The class also examined a pumpkin (cut open), a pumpkin flower, the seeds, the stem and leaves and discussed life cycles. With magnifying lenses they examined rice, bird seed, and mung beans (which are about to sprout!). Finally they planted potato pieces and will watch this grow over the next few months. All students took seeds home to experiment planting them now or saving them for spring planting.
